Washing Instructions
How do I wash cloth diapers?
For the cleanest cloth diapers we recommend washing your diapers and clothing with the same natural detergent.
Before first use: Wash and dry all diapers and inserts at least two times in very hot water with 1 tablespoon or less of natural detergent. Be sure that all detergent is rinsed from your diapers. Pocket Diapers and covers only need to be washed one time.
When diapers are soiled: Close
laundry tabs and remove inserts prior to placing diapers and covers in
your laundry pail. Put diapers, inserts, cloth wipes and diaper pail
liner into the washing machine to wash. Make sure diapers are out of
the pail liner. You may push the diapers out using the liner like a
glove, therefore there is no need to touch any dirty diapers.
- First, do one regular cold or hot wash with no detergent.
- Then, one very hot heavy wash with 1-2 Tablespoons natural detergent and an extra rinse.
- Adjust detergent accordingly for smaller loads.
- For added cleaning power, you may add several drops of Tea Tree Oil or Baking Soda to the second wash cycle.
We recommend natural (no animal testing) unscented detergents found at your natural foods market. Experiment to find which works best with your washing machine and water type.
We do not recommend detergents found in most regular markets. They tend to leave residue causing diapers to smell, wick and become less absorbent.
Never use:
- baby detergents
- detergents with enzymes or fragrance
- bleach
- fabric softener
- too much detergent - will cause build-up & residue on diapers
Wash diapers every two to three days, especially during warmer weather to avoid problems with smell or mildew.
Diapers
can be hung to dry, or put in the dryer. For best results, hang covers
and pocket diapers to dry, or put on a lower heat setting in the dryer
as they dry really fast and hanging them to dry will extend their life.
To speed up drying time, add a dry bath towel to dryer. Remember – no
fabric softener!
This information is intended as a guideline

cloth diapers. Experiment to find the washing method that works best for you. If you need any washing advice please contact shannan@beachbummies.com
How do I store dirty diapers before washday? Our Doorknob Diaper Pail works great!!! It also allows air to circulate, thus less odor.
Another option is the dry pail method. Line your diaper pail with a
waterproof diaper pail liner like our Doorknob Diaper Pail. Put diapers into pail after dumping any
solids into the toilet. Close laundry tabs and remove any inserts. Cover with a loose fitting lid, or remove the
lid altogether – exposure to the air will actually decrease odors. The
wet pail method is not longer recommended as it is a drowning hazard
and may break down natural fibers sooner.
What if I get a stain? If stains do occur, hang diapers in the sun with or without lemon juice to bleach them out naturally.
How do I get rid of diaper pail odors? Sprinkle your Doorknob Diaper Pail (or other pail) with Fluff Dust
and/or place a few drops of essential Tee Tree Oil on inner pad. If
using a hard pail, a loosely fitted lid helps reduce odors by allowing
air to circulate through the pail.
My baby's diapers have an unpleasant smell, even after washing. Why? Diaper
odor can be caused by detergent build up, or by leaving diapers in the diaper pail for too long.
First, put your diapers through another rinse cycle. If there are any suds in the rinse cycle then do another rinse until there are no suds left. When detergent stays on your diapers any undesired smells will cling onto the detergent residue. If your diapers smell clean they are ready to be dried. If your diapers continue to smell unpleasant you may wash diapers in hot water with 1/4 cup baking soda and/or several drops of Tea Tree Oil, and no detergent
until there are no suds left in the rinse cycle. You can also use 1/4
cup of vinegar in the first rinse, either in a fabric softener ball or
in the fabric softener holder in your washing machine.
